Of which there were many. The Ambedkar Bhavan Concert Hall was host to a sizable crowd who like us, were delightfully surprised that Jose Feliciano was actually in Bangalore. The show started with his version of the Bill Withers classic Ain't No Sunshine and at that point you realize, once again, why people would go a great distance hear that voice ... as you can imagine it was quite a special experience.

Through the evening he covered some of his popular English and Spanish titles but my personal high was his soulful cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" that evoked the "Genius of Feliciano". For an instant there, the lights faded away and his voice burnt up an incandescent glow of the woman he was singing about, the mesmeric guitar playing and raw-silk voice giving it a form and shape that made us feel very very mortal.
Among visionaries in music Feliciano must rate very high. From his trend setting rendition of the American National Anthem ( at the cost of his career) , to his choice and style of interpreting his peers (if you thought Light My Fire was good, you should hear his version of The First Time Ever ... And seems like he started performing it quite recently ... I can't find it in stores or on the file sharing networks) he has rendered his vision over the 4 decades he has been performing.
Thankfully we were there to catch a glimpse.
A classic Feliciano video I found on Tube... for those interested.
